PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. As an international non-profit, non-governmental organization, PEFC are dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.
PEFC recognizes both national and international regulations for forest products in the supply chain, ensuring the link back to certified sustainable forests under PEFC-endorsed national forest management standards. PEFC endorses national forest management standards in more than 48 countries worldwide and has chain of custody certificate holders in more than 70 countries.

European Union Deforestation Regulation
In June 2023, the EU published Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, now commonly known as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This new regulation will enter into force on 30th December 2024, aiming to minimize greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and global biodiversity loss. The regulation applies to seven relevant commodities, which may only be placed on the EU market, made available in the EU, or exported from the EU if they meet the following criteria:
- Deforestation-free
- Produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production
- Covered by a due diligence statement
The due diligence system (DDS) comprises three elements: obtaining information, risk analysis/assessment, and risk mitigation. Operators and non-SME traders will need to submit their due diligence statements using a centralized system, which will generate a reference number for each statement. This reference number must be made available to the customs department.

Global Recycled Standard & Content Claim Standard
- The GRS verifies the percentage of recycled content/material and tracks it from the source/recycler to the final product.
- Products certified to GRS contain recycled content/material that has been independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, from the source/recycler to the final product. In addition, facilities from the source/recycler to the final supplier have met social, environmental, and chemical requirements.
- The purchase of GRS certified products demonstrates the demand for recycled content and best processing practices in the supply chain.
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product. The standard applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, chemical content and labeling. GRS covers processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading and distribution of all products made with a minimum of 20% recycled material. It also sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions.
Although the GRS is owned by Textile Exchange, the range of products is not limited to textiles and can include any type of product containing recycled content materials.
The desired effect of GRS is to provide brands with a tool for more accurate labeling, to encourage innovation in the use of reclaimed materials, to establish more transparency in the supply chain, and to provide better information to consumers. The goal of GRS is to increase use of Recycled materials in products and reduce or eliminate the harm caused by its production.
